Why this drill works

Most teams spend zero time defending free kicks. The disorganised wall that doesn't jump together concedes more than a team with no wall. This drill builds the defensive routine: GK organises, post player marks far post, defenders mark nearest opponents.

How to run it

  1. Set attacking free kick at various positions: 25 yards central, wide right, wide left.
  2. GK calls immediately: number in wall, who stands where.
  3. Wall players sprint into position and turn to face the ball. GK adjusts from goal line.
  4. All players not in wall mark their nearest opponent. GK communicates WALL SET.
  5. Free kick taken — wall jumps, GK holds position, markers stay goal-side.
