The simple version (for players)
You cannot be ahead of the ball when the ball is played to you. There must be at least one opponent (usually the goalkeeper) between you and the goal line when your teammate plays the pass.
When offside applies (and when it doesn't)
Offside applies: When a pass is played forward and a teammate is in an offside position.
Offside DOES NOT apply:
- When you receive a ball played backward (even if you're ahead)
- When you receive from a throw-in
- When you receive from a goal kick
- When you receive from a corner
- When the ball is played sideways or backward at all
This is why corner kicks are effective โ no offside. The attacking team can have every player in the penalty box.
Key moments
Offside is judged at the moment the ball is played, not when it's received. If you're onside when the ball leaves your teammate's foot but run past a defender before you receive it, you're still onside.
Conversely: if you're in an offside position when the ball is played, you're offside even if a defender runs past you before you receive it.
Visual aid for teaching
Line up the team. Put a defender (or cone) at one end. Explain: "This defender is the last line. Your striker (the attacker) must have at least one defender between them and the goal line when the pass is played. If the striker is ahead of this defender when the ball is kicked, it's offside."
Walk through scenarios:
- Midfielder passes forward. Striker is level with the last defender โ onside.
- Midfielder passes forward. Striker is ahead of the last defender โ offside.
- Midfielder passes backward. Striker is ahead โ onside (backward passes don't have offside).
- Corner kick. Striker is anywhere in the box โ onside (corners don't have offside).
When to teach offside
U7โU9: No offside. Let kids play without the rule.
U10โU11: Offside from the halfway line only (semi-offside). Makes it simpler than full offside.
U12+: Full offside rule applies.
Handling parent confusion
Parents often misunderstand offside. A simple handout helps: "Offside is when an attacking player is closer to the goal line than the ball and the last opponent when the ball is played to them. Exception: throw-ins, goal kicks, corners, and passes played backward."
