Why this drill works

Most grassroots teams spend training time on attacking free kicks and zero time on defending them. A wall that isn't organised, isn't at the right distance, and doesn't jump together concedes a higher percentage of free kicks than one with no wall at all. This drill builds the defensive routine: GK

How to run it

  1. Set up attacking free kick at various positions.
  2. GK calls immediately: number in wall, who stands where. 'THREE-WALL! JAMES FAR POST!'
  3. Wall players sprint into position facing ball. GK adjusts from goal line.
  4. Players not in wall mark nearest opponent in box. GK communicates 'WALL SET!' before kick is taken.
  5. Free kick taken — wall jumps, GK holds position until last moment, markers goal-side.
