The one cue that matters
Building intensity progressively, not going flat out too early
◆Why this drill works
Most squads jump from physical pre-season directly into match-pace tactical work, and most tactical concepts fail to land because they're being introduced at match speed before the muscle memory exists. This drill is a deliberate slow-build — walk it, jog it, play it slow, play it fast. By the end of 20 minutes, the formation positions and basic movements are starting to become automatic.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- PHASE 1 — Walk it (5 min): both teams in formation. Walking pace. Coach calls 'in possession' or 'out of possession' and players move to their corresponding positions. No ball yet. Just the shape.
- PHASE 2 — Jog it with a ball (5 min): coach has the ball, plays slow passes. Players move into their shape at jog. The team in possession spreads; the team out of possession compresses.
- PHASE 3 — Slow play (5 min): proper game at 50% pace. Players think before every movement. Coach pauses play once per minute to ask 'where should you be right now?'
- PHASE 4 — Match pace (5 min): no more interventions. Just play. The shape should hold under match speed because it was built carefully across the first 15 minutes.
- Debrief: 'who lost their shape under match pace? What triggered it?'
