Why this drill works

Most squads jump from physical pre-season directly into match-pace tactical work, and most tactical concepts fail to land because they're being introduced at match speed before the muscle memory exists. This drill is a deliberate slow-build — walk it, jog it, play it slow, play it fast. By the end of 20 minutes, the formation positions and basic movements are starting to become automatic.

How to run it

  1. PHASE 1 — Walk it (5 min): both teams in formation. Walking pace. Coach calls 'in possession' or 'out of possession' and players move to their corresponding positions. No ball yet. Just the shape.
  2. PHASE 2 — Jog it with a ball (5 min): coach has the ball, plays slow passes. Players move into their shape at jog. The team in possession spreads; the team out of possession compresses.
  3. PHASE 3 — Slow play (5 min): proper game at 50% pace. Players think before every movement. Coach pauses play once per minute to ask 'where should you be right now?'
  4. PHASE 4 — Match pace (5 min): no more interventions. Just play. The shape should hold under match speed because it was built carefully across the first 15 minutes.
  5. Debrief: 'who lost their shape under match pace? What triggered it?'
