Third-Man Run Passing Pattern
The third-man run is the combination that unlocks defensive lines — player A passes to player B, B plays a wall pass back to A, and A plays a diagonal through-ball to player C who has run in behind the defensive line as the attention was on A and B.
◆Why this drill works
The third-man run is the combination that unlocks defensive lines — player A passes to player B, B plays a wall pass back to A, and A plays a diagonal through-ball to player C who has run in behind the defensive line as the attention was on A and B. At U12+, squads that can execute this combination consistently create more chances per session than any other tactical pattern. The defensive line's attention is naturally drawn to the ball, so the two-pass exchange between A and B is what buys C the time and space to make an unmarked run — the whole combination works precisely because defenders track the ball rather than the third player. Progressing from a passive defender, to a passive line, to a fully live defence lets players build the timing of C's run in isolation before adding the pressure of defenders who are actively trying to read and cut it out.
◇Variations and progressions
- Reverse roles — run the pattern with C starting deep and making the underlapping run instead of the wide overlap, to build both variants.
- First-time wall pass only — require B's return pass to be strictly first-time, raising the technical demand on the middle player.
- Two defensive lines — add a second passive line further back so C's run must beat both, closer to a genuine match situation.
- Finish variation — alternate the finish between a low driven pass and a lofted through-ball to test C's control on different service types.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Three players in a triangle. A passes to B. B plays one-touch back to A. A plays diagonal through to C making a run.
- All three cycle through each position. 5 complete patterns from each configuration.
- Introduce a passive defender on B. The pass from A must be timed to beat the defender's shadow.
- Add a passive defensive line (4 players standing). C's run must go in behind the defensive line as the wall pass is played.
- Full pattern with active defenders. Award 2pts for a goal scored from a successful third-man combination.
✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- C's run timed to the wall pass — not starting too early and being offside or tracked
- B's one-touch pass crisp and accurate — the wall pass quality determines the whole combination's success
- A disguising the through-ball until the last possible moment
Correct when you see
- C running before the wall pass is played — the defensive line reads it and steps up
- A's through-ball telegraphed — vary the target and keep the head up through the combination
- B taking an extra touch on the wall pass, giving defenders time to adjust
