Goalkeeper distribution

A focused subset of the goalkeeping library — 3 drills across U11 to adult.

Distribution drills cover the modern keeper's most under-coached skill — playing out with feet, accurate throws, drop-kicks, and goal kicks under pressure. From U10 onward, a keeper who can't distribute holds the team back more than one who can't shot-stop.

About goalkeeper distribution

Distribution is the skill that separates competent grassroots keepers from elite ones. Most GK coaching focuses on shot-stopping because that's what looks important to parents on the touchline. The modern game asks more: keepers receive back-passes under press, play short to a centre-back, switch play with a 50-yard throw. Drill these specifically — they don't develop incidentally from shot-stopping sessions.

How these goalkeeper distribution drills fit into a session

Most coaches use a goalkeeper distribution drill as the technical block of a session — the 15–25 minute window after the warm-up and before the small-sided game. The drills here range from U11 content through to adult material; pick the one that matches your squad's age and current developmental focus. Each drill is self-contained, with setup time, run time, equipment list, and coaching cues clearly laid out.
