◆Why this drill works
The modern goalkeeper at U14+ is expected to play with their feet as a ball-playing outfield player when the team builds from the back. Most grassroots GKs at this age can save shots but panic when receiving back passes under press — they either hoof the ball aimlessly or try to control a ball they've not been trained to control. This drill trains the three distribution choices that cover all back-pass situations, with a pressing forward simulating match pressure.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Feeder plays ball to GK's feet from 10m. GK controls with dominant foot.
- Pressing forward starts moving toward GK the moment the ball is played.
- GK has 3 seconds to distribute: short to CB-L, short to CB-R, or long to CM.
- GK must call their choice as they receive: 'Left!', 'Right!', or 'Long!'
- Run 5 sequences per distribution type (15 total). Coach calls which type for each sequence in the first round; free choice in the second round.
- Progression: feeder varies the ball — rolling, bouncing, aerial. GK must adjust control technique.
