GK Reaction Saves — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Set position maintained between every serve — GK resets after every save
◆Why this drill works
Reaction saves — the save made from a deflection, a rebound, or a close-range shot with no setup time — are won or lost in the GK's ready position and mental focus. A GK in the correct ready stance saves deflections they have no right to save. A GK who has switched off concedes goals they should save. This drill trains the reaction-save habit through volume.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup

2Action

3Finish

▶How to run it
- GK in set position 3m from the coach. Coach serves balls rapidly — one every 3 seconds — from various heights and directions. GK reacts and saves.
- Add a shooter: ball is served to a shooter 8 yards from goal, who shoots first-time. GK has no setup time.
- Rebound drill: coach shoots at the goal, the GK must save the initial shot AND react immediately to the rebound ball served from the side.
- Progress: two balls in play simultaneously. GK saves the first, immediately reacts to the second served from a different position.
- Count saves over 20 attempts. Target: 14/20 minimum. Most GKs hit 12-15; top grassroots GKs consistently 16-18.
