Narrowing the angle before the shot
◆Why this drill works
Crosses are the most common scoring moments goalkeepers face after 1v1s, and the most poorly drilled at grassroots level. A GK who consistently claims the cross removes 60% of cross-related goal-scoring opportunities. A GK who incorrectly comes for a cross they can't reach concedes the open goal. Knowing the difference — and committing to one decision quickly — is the skill this drill builds.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- PHASE 1 — Claim only (4 reps): server crosses to the 6-yard area. GK must come and catch with two hands. No attackers. Focus: 'go through the ball, not around it.' Strong jump, hands high.
- PHASE 2 — Punch only (4 reps): server crosses to the 6-yard area. GK punches with one or two fists. Punch must clear the penalty area. Focus: 'punch through it, not at it.'
- PHASE 3 — Mixed (8 reps): now with 2 attackers and 2 defenders in the box. Server crosses. GK decides: claim if the path is clear, punch if there's traffic, stay if you can't reach.
- PHASE 4 — Call it (8 reps): GK must CALL their decision loudly: 'KEEPER!' or 'PUNCH!' or 'AWAY!' (away = defenders deal with it). The call tells defenders what's happening.
- Track: which decisions did the GK make? Were they correct? A GK who calls 'AWAY' on a ball they could have claimed is leaving the goal exposed.
