Commanding the area and communicating with defenders

Why this drill works

The 1v1 is a mental duel as much as technical. The GK who comes off their line decisively and spreads their body wins more 1v1s than one who retreats and waits. This drill builds the trigger (when to move), angle closure (how to approach), and the spread (how to present body at point of shot).

How to run it

  1. GK starts on goal line. Striker receives through-ball 20 yards out.
  2. Stage 1: GK holds. Striker must score from distance. GK identifies optimal hold position (4–5 yards off line).
  3. Stage 2: GK allowed to come — make decision based on striker's first touch. Big touch = come. Small touch = hold.
  4. Stage 3: GK must come for every serve. Technique: controlled approach, spread body at moment of shot.
  5. Discussion after: which serves required coming, which required holding? GK articulates trigger.
