The one cue that matters
Full effort in the work periods
◆Why this drill works
Running without a ball is the training method players hate most and comply with least. Interval running with a ball produces nearly identical cardiovascular adaptations while maintaining technical contact and positive engagement. Players who would jog through a shuttle run work at genuine intensity when a ball is involved — the competitive instinct and technical focus produce effort that fitness-only drills don't.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Every player with a ball in a 60×40 grid. No defined routes — move freely but at pace.
- ROUND 1 (weeks 1–2): 30 seconds work / 20 seconds rest. 8 rounds. Total: 4 min work, 2.6 min rest.
- ROUND 2 (weeks 3–4): 30 seconds work / 15 seconds rest. 8 rounds. Shorter rest = more demand.
- ROUND 3 (weeks 5–6): 45 seconds work / 15 seconds rest. 6 rounds. Longer work period.
- The 'no-walking' rule is absolute during work periods. Jogging is the minimum — call it once in round 1.
- Add a challenge: players must avoid contact with other players. Develops close control under fatigue.
