Match-Realistic Intervals — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Maintaining technique even as fatigue sets in
◆Why this drill works
Distance running builds aerobic base but doesn't produce match fitness. Football fitness is interval-based — short explosive efforts followed by partial recovery, repeated for 90 minutes. The match-realistic interval format replicates this by enforcing 90 seconds of mandatory high intensity (both teams press, no walking) followed by 30 seconds of walking recovery. After 8 rounds, players have completed the high-intensity work equivalent of a full match in 20 minutes, while maintaining the game context that makes the fitness transferable.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Set up a large-sided game — 8v8 minimum. Normal 11v11 rules.
- Explain the protocol: 'GO = 90 seconds, press hard, no walking. REST = 30 seconds, walk wherever you want.'
- Start stopwatch. Call 'GO' — both teams play at maximum intensity. No walking rule: anyone caught walking during a GO period is flagged.
- At 90 seconds: call 'REST'. Players walk. Ball stays where it is or is retrieved to the nearest player.
- At 120 seconds (30s rest done): call 'GO' again. Ball in play from where it stopped.
- Run 8 complete rounds (8 × 90s work + 8 × 30s rest = 16 minutes active time).
- Finish with 5 minutes of free play at the players' own pace.

?Frequently asked questions
What age group is Match-Realistic Intervals suitable for?
This drill suits youth. Scale the work and recovery periods to the age and fitness of the group — younger players need shorter efforts and longer recovery.
How many players do I need for Match-Realistic Intervals?
This drill works well with around 12 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Match-Realistic Intervals take?
Allow around 3 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to run it — about 18 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
