U13 Transitions & Counter-Attacking
Win the ball, go forwards. Fix the back-pass-after-turnover habit in 75 minutes.
▦Session blocks
Arrival Pairs
A simple pass-and-receive warm-up in pairs as players arrive, getting early touches on the ball rather than standing around waiting for the group to fill up.
Scan-and-Turn Rondo
A small rondo where receivers must check over their shoulder before the ball arrives and open out to face forward on the turn, building the scanning habit this session is built around.
Passing Diamonds
Four players work a diamond passing shape, prioritising a crisp first touch that sets up the next pass over raw pass count.
Switching the Play
Players practise moving the ball from one side of a wide area to the other with a longer diagonal pass, rewarding the switch that catches an opponent's shape unbalanced.
Counter-Attack Transition Game
A possession game with a sudden-transition trigger — the moment possession changes, the team in possession must go forward immediately rather than resetting into a slow build-up, which is the habit this session is aiming to fix.
Pressing Triggers
Players learn to recognise specific cues — a heavy first touch, a backward pass, a receiver caught with their back to goal — that should trigger an immediate press rather than dropping off and inviting time on the ball.
End-of-Session Mini-Tournament
A short small-sided tournament to close the session on competition and enjoyment, applying the transition and pressing habits from the blocks before it under real game pressure.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
