U13 Pre-Season — Week 2 Touch & Tempo
Second week back. The rust is partially gone, the squad knows each other again, fitness is starting to climb. Now layer in technical reps and a bit of temp
⏱Session timeline
▦Session blocks
Pass and Move (Pairs)
0 minStandard pass-and-move warm-up. Raise the technical demand from week 1: 1-touch passing only after minute 4. Keep tempo medium, distance short. The pairs work also continues the social rebuild — partner up players who don't normally talk to each other.
3v1 Rondo
0 minFirst proper rondo of pre-season. Run two parallel 3v1s if you have 12 players. Run for 15 minutes — that's a lot of rondo, but it's reactivating the passing-under-pressure habit that decayed over summer. Don't over-coach. Just let them play, fix only the most obvious technical issues.
5v5 with Target Zones
0 minFirst conditioned SSG of pre-season. The wide-channel rule (goals only count if ball passes through a wide zone) is gentle — encourages width but doesn't punish too harshly. Run 16 minutes with the rule, 9 minutes free play. Watch for which players are still finding their rhythm — that's information for week 3.
Reflection Circle and Stretches
0 minSlightly longer cool-down because legs are still adjusting. 4 minutes of static stretches first, then 6 minutes of circle. Question: 'what's improved from last week?'. Get them to articulate the progress; it builds confidence and re-establishes the sense of the squad as a team that's developing.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
