▦Session blocks
Pattern Play 5v0
0 min5-player combination run at full pace. Two groups simultaneously if squad size allows. Three cycles per group (5 rotations each). The pattern: position 1 to 2, 2 to 4, 3 runs, 4 plays 3, 3 plays 5. Call every pass receiver before playing. By the end of 15 minutes, the sequence should be running without coach prompting.
3v2 Wave Finishing
0 minContinuous 3v2 waves. 20 minutes, full intensity. First team to 12 goals wins — losers do 10 press-ups. The competitive element is essential with adult squads. Without stakes, intensity drops after 8 minutes. With stakes, it holds for the full 20.
Build Out From the Back
0 minGK + 4 vs 3 pressing forwards. 5v3 overload — the build team should always find a free player if the shape is right. 8 sequences. One coaching point: 'who is free? The free player changes with every pass.' That's the whole drill.
Full Game — Possession and Penetration
0 minFull 11v11. 5-pass sequence = 1pt, gate penetration = 3pts, goal = 1pt. The pattern play warm-up should make the passing sequences feel natural. The build-out drill should make the transition from defensive third to midfield feel organised. The game is where it shows — or doesn't.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
