Adult Tactical Shape — In Possession and Out
A 90-minute session establishing the squad's tactical shape both in and out of possession. The session to run early in pre-season or after a tactical reset

Dynamic Movement Circuit
0 min8 movements, no ball. Activates the body for the tactical work ahead. The session is cognitively demanding — start with physical activation that doesn't drain mental energy.
Walk-Through — Both Phases
0 minWalk the formation positions at zero pace. Coach calls 'IN POSSESSION' — players move to in-possession positions. Coach calls 'OUT OF POSSESSION' — players move to out-of-possession positions. 20 minutes, gradually adding a slow ball, then a jogged game. The walk-through is mandatory — adult players will resist it. Don't skip it.
In-Possession Shape — Build Out
0 minGK + 5 defenders/midfielders vs 3 pressing forwards. The in-possession shape under press. Find the free player; play through the press. 8 build sequences. The shape on paper becomes shape in reality only when players know who they're looking for in possession.
Out-of-Possession Shape — Mid Block
0 minTwo banks of four (the mid-block default). Step, cover, recover as a unit. Don't chase the ball out of position. 15 minutes drilling the mid-block movements at slow then full pace.
11v11 — Shape Compliance Bonus
0 minFull game. Bonus scoring: 1 point for every consecutive 10 seconds in shape (in or out of possession). Coach tracks compliance windows on a notepad. The bonus makes shape compliance visible and competitive — players know the shape is being measured.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
