⏱Session timeline
▦Session blocks
Positional Rondo — 7v3
0 minThree zones, three players per zone, one defender per zone. Ball moves between zones freely. The 7v3 positional structure mirrors 11v11 positions. Competitive from the first rep. Call-your-pass rule optional — add it for squads with good passing range.
High Press — Two Triggers
0 minTrigger 1: back-pass to GK. Trigger 2: long ball dropping to defender's feet. Cover players hold — enforce the rule once firmly in the first 4 minutes. Count successful turnovers in the attacking third across 4-minute blocks. 3 turnovers per block is a good target for an adult squad new to structured pressing.
Switching Play — Tempo
0 min7v5, switch through centre within 5 passes. Works well with adult squads because the tempo demand is immediately apparent. Reduces to 4 passes once the switch pattern is established. Most adult squads find the central midfielder's half-turn the hardest single habit — name it explicitly.
11v11 — Press and Penetration
0 minFull game. Bonus scoring: press turnover in opponent's half = 2pts, goal from a switch combination = 3pts, any other goal = 1pt. 30 minutes gives two genuine 15-minute halves. Keep the bonus scoring — it keeps the press intent alive in the game. 2-minute debrief at the end.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
