▦Session blocks
Rondo with Sprint — Defensive Mindset
0 min6v2. Both defenders sprint to cone and back on winning possession. The sprint trigger reinforces the defensive principle that winning the ball is a transition moment that requires immediate action. Sets the defensive mentality for the session.
Back Four — Step, Cover, Recover
0 minWalk through each movement at slow speed before adding pace. Step (whole line advances together), Cover (CB shifts across), Recover (sprint back). Adult squads often resist the walk-through phase — enforce it. The walk-through is the highest-value 3 minutes of the session.
Zonal Corner Defending
0 minSix-player zone structure. Two post players, four in central zones. Two-step forward movement on delivery. GK communication: 'keeper' or 'away' — nothing else. 8 corners from right side, 8 from left. Debrief: who won their zone? Who got pulled out of position?
11v11 — Defending Bonus
0 minFull game. Defending team bonus scoring: 3pts for holding defensive shape for 3 consecutive passes while out of possession, 3pts for a press turnover from a trigger, 5pts for a clean sheet in any 5-minute window. Attacking team scores normally. The bonus scoring makes defensive effort visible and competitive.
◆What you'll need from yourself
Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.
!Common problems
Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
