The tracking-back problem is almost never about attitude. Players who don't recover after losing possession aren't lazy — they haven't had the recovery run drilled as an automatic response. The moment possession is lost should trigger a sprint, not a decision.
Why it happens
In matches, the brain processes loss of possession as a moment of cognitive overload: frustration at the mistake, confusion about where to go, awareness of the defensive shape required. Without a trained automatic response, the brain defaults to the path of least resistance — which is stopping.
The habit forms through repetition of a specific trigger: loss of possession = immediate sprint to recovery position. The drill must isolate exactly that trigger and create 40+ reps of the automatic response.
The drill that fixes it
Use the Recovery Run After Losing Possession drill. In a 9v9 or 7v7, the rule is: on any turnover, the two players nearest the ball must sprint to a designated recovery cone before the attack develops. The attack earns 3pts for any goal scored before both runners reach their cones.
The scoring rule creates genuine consequences — which is what converts a coached behaviour into a habit.
The coaching cue that works
Single phrase, every time: "If you lose it, you run." Not jog. Not walk. Sprint. The cue is the turnover itself — the moment possession changes is the start gun. Three to four sessions of explicit reinforcement before it becomes automatic.
Age-specific notes
U9–U11: Individual recovery run only. Don't introduce the team shape element yet — just sprint back to a cone. The physical habit is what matters at this age.
U12–U13: Add the team context. Two players must recover. The coordination of group recovery begins here.
U14+: Introduce defensive transition shape — the sprint back is to a specific position, not just a cone. The habit is now positional as well as physical.
What not to do
Don't run fitness drills as punishment for not tracking back. This trains resentment, not habit. The drill solution is better than the punishment solution every time.
