Why this drill works

Long-range shooting is neglected in youth training because it's rarely relevant at U8–U12. By U16, a well-struck shot from 22 yards is a genuine goal-scoring mechanism, particularly when the opposition's defensive block drops deep. The technique is specific: locked ankle (not floppy foot), body leaning over the ball (not leaning back, which balloons the shot), and a low follow-through that keeps the strike on target. These three habits are trained separately before being applied to a moving-ball situation and then a lay-off under light pressure.

How to run it

  1. PHASE 1 (4 reps each zone): Set ball. Striker approaches from 5 yards behind the ball. Strike with instep. Focus: locked ankle, lean over, follow through low. GK saves or collects.
  2. PHASE 2 (4 reps each zone): Rolled ball. Feeder rolls the ball from the side at walking pace. Striker must time approach and strike without stopping the ball first. One touch strike.
  3. PHASE 3 (4 reps): Lay-off under pressure. Feeder plays ball into striker's feet with passive defender 3 yards behind. Striker lays off to a second player arriving from deep at 22 yards. The arriving player strikes first-touch.
  4. After all three phases: competitive element — two strikers alternating, track on-target strikes per phase.
