Finishing Under Pressure
The shooting drill that just lines players up to take 30 unopposed shots teaches finishing in a vacuum.
◆Why this drill works
The shooting drill that just lines players up to take 30 unopposed shots teaches finishing in a vacuum. Real finishing happens in 2 seconds, with a defender close, while making the shot/pass decision. This drill recreates that pressure. The server feeds the attacker, who has 3 seconds to shoot or it's a turnover. A 'shadow' defender chases at 80% pace — pressure without injury risk. Players learn to take the touch that opens the shot, not the touch that delays the decision.
▦The drill in three phases
▶How to run it
- Mark out a 25×16 yard pitch with one mini-goal at the far end (or a full goal with a keeper if available). Three roles: Server (S), Attacker (A), Shadow Defender (D). Queue at the start cone.
- Server stands 8 yards from goal with a supply of balls. Attacker starts with their back to goal at the halfway point. Shadow defender starts 3 yards behind the attacker.
- On 'go', the server plays a firm pass into the attacker's feet. The attacker must finish within 3 seconds of the first touch — coach counts aloud: '3, 2, 1, OUT.'
- Shadow defender chases at 80% pace — close enough to pressure, not close enough to dive in. Their job is to pressure the decision, not win the ball.
- If A scores: 1 point to the attacker. If D pressures the shot off-target or the 3 seconds expire: 1 point to the defender. Run for 12 minutes; rotate roles every 90 seconds.
- Progression at minute 12: Defender now goes at 100% pace and CAN tackle. Attacker still has 3 seconds. The shot is now genuinely contested. This is the match-realistic version.
- Final 4 minutes: Two attackers (2v1), one ball into the area. Adds passing as a finishing option — sometimes the best finish is a square ball to the open teammate.
✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- Body over the ball to keep the shot down
- Head steady and eyes on the ball through the strike
- Clean contact with the laces, not the toe
Correct when you see
- Taking an extra touch when the shot was on — be decisive
- Standing and watching instead of following in for the rebound
- Leaning back and ballooning the shot over — get the body over the ball
