Runner arriving as the cut-back lands — timing is everything

Why this drill works

The cut-back is one of the highest-percentage goal-scoring positions in football. Most grassroots players ignore them or arrive at the wrong time. This drill builds the movement pattern, timing, and first-time strike habit.

The drill in three phases

SA

2Action

How to run it

  1. Wide player starts at the corner of the penalty area. Two runners from central positions.
  2. Wide player drives to byline and pulls back across goal. Near-post runner peels to near post, second runner hits top of box.
  3. First 5 reps: passive movement only — establish the pattern.
  4. Introduce the cut-back ball. Runners time their arrival.
  5. Progress: add passive GK then passive defender.

?Frequently asked questions

What age group is Cut-Back Finishing suitable for?
This drill suits U11–U15. Younger players can use a bigger target or closer range; older players should add a defender and a goalkeeper to increase the pressure.
How many players do I need for Cut-Back Finishing?
This drill works well with around 12 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Cut-Back Finishing take?
Allow around 5 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to run it — about 20 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
