Why this drill works

In weeks 5–6 of pre-season the session format should mirror a match day exactly. The physical benefit is secondary; the primary gain is psychological readiness. Teams who have rehearsed match day don't get surprised by it.

How to run it

  1. Pre-match warm-up (15 minutes): same routine as every match day — dynamic mobility, ball mastery, pairs passing, rondo.
  2. Pre-match team talk (3 minutes): real team talk. Formation reminder, one attacking focus, one defensive focus.
  3. First half (20 minutes): full 11v11. Substitutions as match. Score tracked.
  4. Half-time (3 minutes): real half-time talk. Coach picks ONE thing from first half to change.
  5. Second half (20 minutes): apply the half-time instruction. Post-match: player of day voted by squad.
