Why this drill works

Building out from the back is one of the most poorly coached aspects of grassroots football at U15+. Most squads either long-ball it when pressed or panic and give possession away. The 5v3 overload (GK + 4 defenders vs 3 forwards) is a permanent structural advantage — the defending team should always be able to find a free player. When they can't, the problem is positioning or decision-making, not the lack of passing options. This drill makes the overload visible and builds the habit of finding the free man rather than playing the safe long ball.

How to run it

  1. GK starts with ball. 4 defenders spread across the width — two CBs central, two wide.
  2. 3 forwards press from the halfway line downward. They cannot enter the penalty area.
  3. Build team goal: pass the ball through the halfway line or dribble it over. Possession lost before halfway = press team scores.
  4. GK counts as a player — the 5v3 overload means there's always a free player if the shape is right.
  5. Reset after each sequence. Run 10 build sequences, then swap press and build teams.
  6. Coaching focus: who is free? The free player changes with every pass. Players must scan before receiving.
