GK Command of the Box — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Call made before the GK commits to the ball — not mid-jump
◆Why this drill works
A GK who commands their box vocally reduces aerial confusion, prevents defender errors, and organises the defensive shape before it breaks down. Most grassroots GKs are quiet. The habit of calling — KEEPER, AWAY, MAN ON, DROP, HOLD — must be trained explicitly because it doesn't emerge naturally from quiet personalities under pressure.
▦The drill in three phases
1Setup
Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish
The end action — pass, shot or outcome the drill builds toward.

▶How to run it
- Identify the five key calls. Practice each call out loud: KEEPER (I'm coming), AWAY (clear it), MAN ON (you have a player behind you), DROP (defence drop), HOLD (don't play).
- Ball served into the box from various positions. GK must make a call before moving. No call = rep doesn't count.
- Add three defenders who must respond to the calls. KEEPER means defenders step aside. AWAY means the nearest defender clears.
- Progress: live crossing drill. Wide player crosses from various angles. GK calls intent before the ball arrives.
- Final 5 minutes: 7v7 or 9v9. Count how many times the GK makes a call during the game.

✦Coaching points
Praise when you see
- Call made before the GK commits to the ball — not mid-jump
- Defenders responding to the call — the communication system must be two-way
Correct when you see
- GK going for the ball silently and colliding with a defender — no call is the primary cause of GK-defender collisions
- Calls that come too late — the call must precede the movement
