The one cue that matters
First touch out of the feet into space, ready for the next action
◆Why this drill works
Scanning — checking your shoulders before receiving — is the single most-correlated technical habit with elite midfield performance (Jordet, 2020). Yet it's almost never coached at grassroots. This rondo creates the consistent demand: the receiver must shout the colour of the cone behind them before the ball arrives. They cannot turn to look — they must scan ahead of time. Within 3 sessions, players form the habit unconsciously.
▦The drill in three phases

2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish

▶How to run it
- Square 12×12 with 4 different-coloured cones at corners (red, blue, yellow, green).
- 4 attackers at the corners, 2 defenders inside.
- Attackers pass to keep possession (rondo).
- Receiver must shout the colour of the cone closest to their back BEFORE the ball arrives.
- If they don't shout in time, defenders win the ball and switch in.
- Scanning means: a quick shoulder-check just before the pass arrives — twice if possible.
