Why this drill works

Receiving with back to goal, half-turn first touch, then immediately passing forward is one of the highest-value technical combinations at U10-U13. The critical detail: the first touch must already point in the intended direction — it is a directional touch, not control-then-turn.

How to run it

  1. Groups of 4 in a line. A at one end, D at the other. B and C 8 yards apart in the middle.
  2. A plays to B (facing away). B takes a half-turn first touch to face C. B passes immediately to C.
  3. C plays to D. D takes half-turn first touch. D passes back to C. Continuous.
  4. Introduce passive defender 1m behind turning player. Turn must go away from defender.
  5. Progress: call the side before ball arrives: TURN RIGHT.
