Why this drill works

The speed dribble is underdrilled in youth football because most dribbling practice is done at slow speed — slaloms, ball mastery circuits, close-contact skill moves. Match-realistic dribbling at U13+ often requires a straight-line drive at pace before the 1v1 skill phase begins. The attacker who can drive 15m at full speed and then immediately use a skill move is more dangerous than one who only dribbles well at slow speed. This drill trains both components as a single unit.

How to run it

  1. Attacker starts at the near cone with the ball. Defender starts at the far cone (15m away), facing the attacker.
  2. Coach calls 'go'. Attacker drives at pace to the far cone.
  3. Defender steps forward to engage. Attacker uses a skill move to beat the defender before the goal.
  4. Attacker must attempt a shot within 3 seconds of passing the far cone.
  5. Rotate: attacker becomes defender, new attacker from the queue.
  6. Track: how many beats per 6 attempts? Target 3+. Competitive between pairs.
