Why this drill works

Most youth teams who try to press at U15 do one of two things: everyone chases the ball simultaneously (which leaves massive space in behind) or no one commits to the press (which lets the opposition play through easily). The structured high press has three components that have to be trained together: the trigger (what event starts the press), the first presser (who goes to the ball), and the cover (what everyone else does). This drill trains all three as a unit. When the press works it produces turnovers in dangerous areas. When it doesn't, the cover structure prevents the ball over the top.

How to run it

  1. Attacking team starts with the ball at their goalkeeper. Defending team holds a shape 25 yards from the attackers' goal.
  2. TRIGGER 1: the ball is passed back to the goalkeeper. Pressing team's striker immediately presses the GK. Two central midfielders press the CB nearest the ball. Wide players tuck in to block through-ball lanes.
  3. TRIGGER 2: any long ball that drops to an attacking defender's feet. Nearest presser attacks the ball, second presser covers the most dangerous pass option, everyone shifts toward the ball.
  4. Cover rule: the two deepest midfielders hold positions behind the press to prevent balls over the top. They don't press — they cover.
  5. Regain target: pressing team wins the ball in the attacking third. That's a press success. Work in 4-minute press blocks, count successes.
  6. If the ball escapes the press, reset to mid-block and wait for the next trigger.
