Why this drill works

Man-marking at corners fails consistently at adult and senior youth level because a physically dominant attacker can always lose a static marker who is waiting rather than moving. Zonal marking — defending a zone rather than a person — removes this weakness by giving defenders momentum (they move toward the ball) rather than reactivity (they respond to a runner's movement). The drill trains the six-player zone structure, the two-step-and-meet movement, and the collective clearance direction that makes zonal marking work.

How to run it

  1. Set up six defenders in zonal positions: two on the posts (NP and FP), four in zone positions across the 6-yard area and penalty spot.
  2. Attackers wait outside the area. Corner taker positions in the corner arc.
  3. Corner is taken. Defenders take two steps forward to meet the ball — not standing and waiting.
  4. The defender in the ball's zone wins or attacks the header. Others hold their zones.
  5. After clearance: defenders immediately reorganise to starting positions. Run 8 corners, then switch sides.
  6. Debrief: 'who won the ball in their zone? Who got caught moving too early or too late?'
