Welcome to youth football

Your child has joined a team โ€” whether this is entirely new to your family or you're a veteran of older siblings' teams, this guide is a starting point covering what to expect, with links to deeper guides on each topic throughout this site.

Understanding the format

Youth football's format changes as players get older โ€” 3v3, 5v5, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11 โ€” under the FA's Future Fit framework (see our guide). Each format has its own pitch size and rules; your league/club will tell you which applies to your child's age group specifically.

Kit and equipment

The basics โ€” boots, shin pads, appropriate kit for the weather โ€” are covered in our equipment guides. Your club will specify any team kit requirements; beyond that, comfort and appropriate fit matter more than brand or price.

The role of parents

Getting your child to training and matches, supporting from the sideline (see our sideline guide for what "supportive" looks like in practice), and staying informed via whatever communication channel your coach uses (see our parent communication guide) โ€” these are the practical basics of being a football parent.

Playing time and development

Most grassroots coaches follow some form of rotation approach (see our substitution guides) โ€” if you're ever unsure why your child played the minutes they did in a given match, your coach's pre-season meeting (see our guide) should have covered the general approach; asking is always reasonable if it wasn't clear.

Supporting your child

Whether your child seems confident or nervous (see our match-day nerves guide), struggling or thriving (see our confidence-building guide), the most useful thing a parent can do is usually the simplest: enjoy watching them play, keep the car-ride-home light (see our coaching-your-own-child guide for why this matters even for non-coach parents), and let the coach handle the football side.

Where to go for more

This site's guides cover specific topics in depth โ€” age-group guides (U7 through U16), specific concerns (injuries, nerves, difficult moments), and broader context (Future Fit, formats, development). Whatever specific question comes up through the season, there's likely a dedicated guide โ€” this page is the starting point, not the whole story.
