Why this drill works

Playing into the pivot and using their lay-off is futsal's central attacking mechanism. The pivot holds the ball with back to goal, and teammates feed off the lay-offs to attack the space behind. This drill builds the timing and angles of pivot play.

How to run it

  1. A pivot holds position with back to goal. Players feed the ball in from deep.
  2. The pivot lays the ball off first-time to a supporting runner.
  3. Runners attack the space the lay-off opens up.
  4. Rotate the pivot role so everyone learns to hold and lay off.
  5. Add a defender marking the pivot to make the hold-up realistic.

?Frequently asked questions

Can any player be the pivot?
Ideally the pivot is strong, good at holding the ball, and a clinical finisher. But every player should learn the role — futsal's rotations mean players cycle through the pivot position constantly.
