Why this drill works

When the pivot receives with space behind their marker, the spin — turning sharply to attack the goal — is devastating. This drill trains the pivot to read when to lay off versus when to spin and attack, and to execute the turn cleanly.

How to run it

  1. A pivot receives with back to goal, a passive defender behind.
  2. If the defender is tight, the pivot lays off. If there's space, the pivot spins and attacks.
  3. Train both decisions: read the defender, then execute lay-off or spin.
  4. The spin uses a sole roll or quick turn to get the ball facing goal.
  5. Add a finish: after the spin, the pivot drives at goal and shoots.

?Frequently asked questions

How does the pivot know whether to spin or lay off?
It's about the defender. If the defender is tight on their back, lay off — spinning means turning into them. If there's a yard of space, spin and attack. The pivot must feel where the defender is.
