Why this drill works

When an attacker breaks through in futsal, the keeper must come out and make themselves big — the 'spread' save, covering as much of the small goal as possible. Timing the rush and the spread is a specialist futsal keeping skill. This drill trains the 1v1 save.

How to run it

  1. An attacker drives at goal 1v1. The keeper times their rush out.
  2. The keeper comes out to narrow the angle, then spreads to block the shot.
  3. Timing is everything — too early and the attacker rounds them, too late and they can't set.
  4. Vary the attacker's approach: shooting early, trying to round, dinking.
  5. Build repetitions so the keeper reads the attacker's intention.

?Frequently asked questions

What is a spread save?
When 1v1 with an attacker close in, the keeper makes their body as big as possible — arms and legs spread — to block the maximum area of the small futsal goal. Combined with good timing of the rush, it's the keeper's main 1v1 weapon.
