First touch drills

The touch decides everything that comes next.

First touch is the most under-coached fundamental in grassroots football. A good first touch sets up the next pass; a bad one creates 0.4 seconds of panic that ruins everything downstream.

About first touch drills

Coaches spend hours on shooting and passing while ignoring the technique that determines whether either of them happens cleanly. A directional first touch — into space, away from pressure, toward the next pass — is what separates a player who keeps possession from one who concedes it. These drills isolate the technique in low-pressure environments, then progressively layer in pressure.

What you need for first touch sessions

First touch work needs a ball per player for the solo and pair phases. Cones for the gates. Nothing specialist needed — standard training balls are fine.
