Why this drill works

The diamond (or rotating square) is futsal's core defensive shape — four players covering the court, shifting together to deny central space and force play wide. This drill builds the coordinated movement that turns four individuals into an organised unit.

How to run it

  1. Four defenders set up in a diamond. Attackers pass the ball around the outside.
  2. The diamond shifts as a unit toward the ball, the nearest player pressing.
  3. Players communicate and cover, never leaving the central space open.
  4. Add live attackers trying to play through the middle — the diamond must deny it.
  5. Progress to a full 4v4 where the defensive diamond must hold its shape.
