Touch-tight marking denying the pivot's turn

Why this drill works

The pivot is the opposition's focal point — stop the pivot and you blunt their whole attack. Defending the pivot (tight marking, denying the turn, anticipating the lay-off) is a specialist futsal defensive skill. This drill isolates it.

How to run it

  1. An attacker plays into a pivot; a defender marks the pivot tightly.
  2. The defender stays touch-tight, denying the pivot space to turn.
  3. The defender anticipates and intercepts the lay-off where possible.
  4. Add a runner the pivot can lay off to — the defender must deny or delay it.
  5. Progress to defending the pivot in a small-sided game.

?Frequently asked questions

Why focus on defending the pivot specifically?
The pivot is where most futsal attacks run through. A pivot allowed to receive, turn, or lay off freely will create chance after chance. Denying the pivot disrupts the opposition's central attacking mechanism.
