Ball stopping dead on the first contact

Why this drill works

Receiving a pass and killing it dead under the sole — the toe-cap stop — is what makes futsal possible in tight space. A football first touch that lets the ball run is fatal on a small court. This drill trains the instant deadening of the ball that buys a futsal player the half-second they need.

How to run it

  1. In pairs 4m apart, one ball. Server passes firmly along the floor; receiver stops it dead under the sole.
  2. The receiving foot meets the ball and traps it instantly — no bounce, no roll-away.
  3. Progress: receiver stops it and immediately rolls it to a new position before passing back.
  4. Increase the pace of service. The faster ball demands a softer, better-timed sole trap.
  5. Add a third player: receive, stop, and redirect to a player at a different angle.

?Frequently asked questions

Is this different from a football first touch?
Yes. In football you often cushion the ball into space to run onto. In futsal's tight court, you usually kill it dead under the sole so you can decide your next move without the ball running away from you.
