Why this drill works

The chop (cutting the ball back sharply behind the standing leg) is futsal's escape move — it lets a player reverse direction instantly to beat a committed defender or escape a tight corner. On the small court where space vanishes in a heartbeat, the chop is a survival skill.

How to run it

  1. Each player with a ball. Dribble forward, then chop the ball back across the body behind the standing leg.
  2. Practise both directions — chopping with the inside and outside of each foot.
  3. Add a cone as a 'defender' to chop around.
  4. Pairs: a passive defender approaches, the carrier chops away from them.
  5. Finish in a grid where players chop to escape pressure and protect the ball.

?Frequently asked questions

When is the chop most useful?
When a defender commits or you're running out of space near a sideline. The sudden reversal of direction wrong-foots the defender and buys you a new angle in tight space.
