Why this drill works

With a defender always close in futsal, shielding — putting your body between the defender and the ball — is constant. A player who can shield buys time, protects possession, and waits for support. It's an underrated but essential futsal skill.

How to run it

  1. Pairs, one ball. The carrier shields the ball using the sole and body; the defender tries to win it.
  2. The carrier keeps their body between defender and ball, arm out for balance and feel.
  3. Rotate the ball with the sole to keep it on the far side from the defender.
  4. Add a target to pass to once support arrives — shield, then release.
  5. Build to keeping possession in a tight grid under pressure.

?Frequently asked questions

Is shielding just blocking with your body?
It's controlled use of the body and the sole together — staying balanced, keeping the ball on the far side, and being ready to turn or release. Done well it's a skill, not just standing in the way.
