The one cue that matters
Body positioned squarely between defender and ball
◆Why this drill works
With a defender always close in futsal, shielding — putting your body between the defender and the ball — is constant. A player who can shield buys time, protects possession, and waits for support. It's an underrated but essential futsal skill.

▶How to run it
- Pairs, one ball. The carrier shields the ball using the sole and body; the defender tries to win it.
- The carrier keeps their body between defender and ball, arm out for balance and feel.
- Rotate the ball with the sole to keep it on the far side from the defender.
- Add a target to pass to once support arrives — shield, then release.
- Build to keeping possession in a tight grid under pressure.

?Frequently asked questions
Is shielding just blocking with your body?
It's controlled use of the body and the sole together — staying balanced, keeping the ball on the far side, and being ready to turn or release. Done well it's a skill, not just standing in the way.
