Why this drill works

Dribbling through tight gates with sole and inside-of-foot control replicates the futsal reality: navigating a crowded court where space is measured in inches. This drill builds the manipulation skills — sole rolls, drags, cuts — under the pressure of tight targets.

How to run it

  1. Set up 8 small gates (1m wide) randomly around a 15x15m area.
  2. Players dribble and must pass through as many gates as possible in 60 seconds, using sole control to change direction sharply.
  3. Count gates per player. Rest, then beat your own score.
  4. Progress: gates must be taken in alternating directions, forcing more turns.
  5. Add one passive defender who shadows — players use close control to protect the ball while finding gates.

?Frequently asked questions

How tight should the gates be?
1 metre — deliberately tight. Futsal control is about manipulating the ball in minimal space, so the gates should force precise, close manipulation, not loose dribbling.
