Session blocks

1

Rondo — 4v1 and 5v2

0 min

Start with 4v1 for 4 minutes, then expand to 5v2 for 4 minutes. The 5v2 creates the triangles and switch-of-play pattern that the combination drill will use.

2

Third-Man — 3v3 Progression

0 min

Same third-man combination but with 3 defenders instead of 2. The extra defender means the timing must be sharper. 4 reps per trio. Focus on C's run timing — too early and D3 reads it; too late and the space has gone.

3

Press and Cover — Trigger Pressing

0 min

Same press-and-cover setup as the introduction session, but add the pressing trigger: when the ball goes back to the goalkeeper, the whole team presses a line higher. Attackers are coached to use the GK as a pressure relief; defenders must recognise the trigger and press immediately.

4

9v9 — Bonus Scoring Round 2

0 min

Full 9v9. Bonus scoring for third-man combinations (3 pts) and successful press-and-cover units without conceding (2 pts). Coach stays on the touchline. Track every bonus-scoring moment — read them back in the debrief with specific player names.

5

Debrief + stretches

0 min

Sit the squad down. Three questions: 'Where did the third-man run work today?' 'Where did we hold shape when defending?' 'One thing each person wants to improve next session.' Keep it to 4 minutes. Stretches for 2 minutes.

What you'll need from yourself

Clear demonstrations and high energy. Keep the session moving with minimal queuing, and reinforce one or two key coaching points rather than overloading players with information.

!Common problems

Players standing in queues (set up enough stations to keep everyone active) and the session running too long on one activity (keep blocks tight and move on while engagement is high).
