About possession drills
Possession drills work when the constraints reward keeping the ball. Time-based: keep it for 30 seconds, score a point. Pass-based: complete 8 passes, score a point. Pressure-based: a defender who wins it gets to score in 5 seconds. The best possession drills hide the technical work inside the competition — players think they're competing, but they're drilling first touch, scanning, body shape, and decision-making all at once.
How these possession drills drills fit into a session
Most coaches use a possession drills drill as the technical block of a session — the 15–25 minute window after the warm-up and before the small-sided game. The drills here range from U9 content through to adult material; pick the one that matches your squad's age and current developmental focus. Each drill is self-contained, with setup time, run time, equipment list, and coaching cues clearly laid out.
