Why this drill works

The through-ball-and-finish is the most-scored goal type in modern football — at every level from grassroots to elite. This drill builds the two skills that combination requires: timing the run (so you arrive at the ball, not before or after) and the first touch that takes you past the keeper. Repetition matters here because the technique is non-intuitive — most U11s' instinct is to shoot first-time, but the better finish is usually a touch around the keeper. The drill teaches the touch through forced pattern repetition.

How to run it

  1. Mark out a 30×16 yard pitch with a goal at the far end (full goal with keeper if available, mini-goal if not). Server stands at the start cone with a supply of balls. Attacker starts 8 yards diagonally behind the server, level with the start cone.
  2. On 'go', the server plays a firm through ball into the space ahead — the ball should travel about 18–20 yards at jogging pace (so the attacker can catch it).
  3. Attacker times their run to meet the ball outside the keeper's reach but before it goes out of play. Their first touch takes them past or around the keeper; their second touch finishes.
  4. Coach the timing cue: the attacker should not start running until the server is in their kicking motion. Too early = offside instinct; too late = ball runs through.
  5. Run for 12 minutes. Rotate roles every 6 reps (so each player gets ~10 reps as attacker across the block).
  6. Progression at minute 12: Add a defender starting 5 yards back from the attacker. Now the attacker has to time the run AND beat the defender's recovery. Realistic match scenario.
  7. Final 4 minutes: Two-touch only — attacker can't dribble. Pure first-touch-and-finish technique. Either round the keeper with the touch, or finish first-time if the angle suits.

Equipment checklist

    Coaching points

    Praise when you see

    • Quick release before the defender or keeper sets
    • Body over the ball to keep the shot down

    Correct when you see

    • Leaning back and ballooning the shot over — get the body over the ball
    • Snatching at the shot without setting the feet
    • Always going for power — placement beats power near goal
