Why this drill works

U8 shooting confidence is built through successful repetitions, not technical instruction. Most U8 shooting drills ask children to shoot from distances they can't reliably reach, which produces frustration rather than improvement. This drill uses a shooting line at 6 yards from a mini goal — genuinely scoreable from — and focuses on the approach rather than the strike. Dribble in control, reach the line, look up, shoot. The goal is almost certainly going in, which is the point. Confidence comes before technique.

How to run it

  1. Set up a mini goal and mark a shooting line 6 yards in front of it. Start cone 12 yards back.
  2. Player 1 dribbles from the start cone to the shooting line.
  3. At the shooting line, player looks up at the goal and shoots.
  4. Next player goes as soon as player 1 has shot. Continuous flow.
  5. After 8 reps: introduce a rotating goalkeeper (another player). GK gets 4 saves then swaps.
  6. Progression: move the shooting line to 8 yards. Same structure.
