Why this drill works

U15 squads who can retain possession in tight spaces often fail to switch play quickly enough to exploit the width of a full 11v11 pitch. The switch is delayed, telegraphed, or never comes — and the opposition defensive block has time to shift across. This drill trains the switch as an urgent tactical action: the ball must cross the central channel within 5 passes or the possession phase fails. The 7v5 overload means the switch is achievable, but only if the central midfielders move and take the ball at pace. The speed of the switch — not just its accuracy — is the outcome.

How to run it

  1. Attacking team starts with the ball in one wide channel. They have 5 passes to switch to the opposite wide channel.
  2. A 'switch' is defined as: ball played to a wide player in the far channel who is 2+ yards from a defender.
  3. Defending team defends compactly. They can press in the central zone but must track back if the switch is completed.
  4. Successful switch = 1 point for attackers. Defending team wins possession = 1 point for defenders.
  5. After each sequence (success or possession won), reset to the left channel and repeat.
  6. After 8 minutes, swap: defenders become attackers and vice versa.
