Reactive Agility Gates — full pitch view
The one cue that matters
Using the recovery periods properly
◆Why this drill works
Agility ladders train pre-programmed footwork patterns. Reactive agility — responding to an unpredictable stimulus and changing direction — is what football actually requires. The numbered gate drill trains this: the player doesn't know which gate is next until the coach calls it, forcing a genuine reactive response. Studies on youth athletic development suggest reactive agility produces greater transfer to sport performance than planned agility. It's also more engaging — players who find ladder drills repetitive stay fully focused when the stimulus is unpredictable.
▦The drill in three phases

2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish

▶How to run it
- Set up 6 numbered gates in a 16×12 grid — 3 on the left side, 3 on the right.
- Player stands in the centre. Coach calls a number — player sprints through that gate and returns to centre.
- Coach calls the next number before the player returns — they change direction mid-run if needed.
- Run for 20 seconds, then 10 seconds rest. 6 rounds total.
- Progression: player carries a ball. Must dribble through the gate rather than just running.
- Competition: two players compete side by side. First to reach the called gate wins the point.

?Frequently asked questions
What age group is Reactive Agility Gates suitable for?
This drill suits youth. Scale the work and recovery periods to the age and fitness of the group — younger players need shorter efforts and longer recovery.
How many players do I need for Reactive Agility Gates?
This drill works well with around 12 players. With fewer, reduce the groups or rotate players through; with more, set up multiple stations so everyone stays active rather than queuing.
How long does Reactive Agility Gates take?
Allow around 3 minutes to set up and 15 minutes to run it — about 18 minutes in total. It fits well as the technical or main block of a session, leaving time for a warm-up and a game.
