The one cue that matters
Communicating with teammates — who presses, who covers
◆Why this drill works
U12 is the year the 9v9 format arrives and team defending becomes necessary. Players who learnt 1v1 defending principles at U10–U11 now need to understand that defending isn't 9 individuals — it's a shape. Press and Cover drills the two-player unit (first and second defender) that is the foundation of every compact team shape. When the press-and-cover unit is automatic, the rest of the team compacts around it. When it isn't, the team chases the ball and leaves space.
▦The drill in three phases

Starting positions — players, zones and equipment in place.
2Action
Movement begins — players run, dribble and create the pattern.
3Finish

▶How to run it
- Attacking team starts with the ball at the halfway line. Defending team is in a loose 4-3-1 shape.
- When the attacking team plays the ball to any player, the nearest defender (P) presses immediately — within 2 seconds.
- The second nearest defender (C) takes cover position: 4–5 yards behind P, angled to intercept the most likely pass.
- The rest of the defending team compacts — they don't chase the ball, they shrink the space.
- If P wins the ball, the defending team keeps possession for 5 passes. If the ball moves past P, C becomes the new P and a new C takes cover.
- Defending team scores 1 point per 5-pass sequence. Attacking team scores by playing a through-ball into the end zone.
