What Future Fit actually is

Future Fit is the framework underpinning how youth football in England is structured โ€” the progression of formats, pitch sizes, and rules by age group that's referenced throughout this site (our drill library, for instance, is organised partly around it). If you've ever wondered why the format your team plays keeps changing as players get older, Future Fit is the "why."

The format progression

The core idea is a gradual scaling: 3v3 at the youngest ages, moving through 5v5, 7v7, 9v9, and finally 11v11 as players get older. Each step adds players, pitch size, and rules (a goalkeeper appears, then offside is introduced, and so on) gradually rather than all at once. See our articles on small-sided games and on formations in youth football for more on why this progression matters developmentally.

Why it changed from the old system

Older systems often had much younger players playing larger-sided games (sometimes close to full 11v11) far earlier than is now considered developmentally appropriate โ€” producing the "watching from a distance" problem covered in our small-sided games article. Future Fit's gradual progression is specifically designed around research into how young players actually develop best: more touches, more involvement, appropriately-sized challenges at each age.

What it means for coaches day to day

Practically: the format, pitch size, and rules for your age group aren't arbitrary or "simplified versions of the real game for now" โ€” they're the appropriate version of the game for that age, full stop. This is also why, for example, offside genuinely doesn't apply at 7v7 โ€” not because it's "not taught yet," but because it's not part of that format by design (see our offside guide).

Where to find official details

For the specific formats, pitch dimensions, and rules for your age group and league, your county FA's website and your league's own documentation are the authoritative sources โ€” these can vary slightly by league and are periodically updated, so checking your specific league's current guidance beats relying on general descriptions (including this one) for exact specifics.
