The phases
Phase 1 (Week 1โ2): Symptom-free activity
The player is pain-free, swelling is gone, and they've been cleared by a physio (if serious injury) or you (if minor).
Training: Light ball work. Passing, receiving, gentle dribbling. No contact, no sprinting, no hard changes of direction.
Duration: 20 minutes (even if they feel fine, stop at 20 min). Three times per week.
Phase 2 (Week 3โ4): Graduated intensity
Increase duration to 30 minutes. Add technical drills that include changes of direction (cone weaving, shuttle runs) at 70% intensity.
No contact. No match simulation yet. Just technical work at increased intensity.
Phase 3 (Week 5): Match simulation (controlled)
Small-sided game (4v4 or 5v5). 15 minutes. Coach manages intensity โ whistle for stops if needed. Not competitive, just match-like conditions.
Phase 4 (Week 6): Return to team training
Full training. Normal drills. All intensities. But no match yet.
Phase 5 (Week 7+): Return to matches
Start on the bench. Enter as a sub for 10 minutes (if easy match) or 5 minutes (if close match). Gradually increase minutes if no re-injury.
Red flags (stop immediately)
- Swelling returns
- Pain during or after activity
- Loss of confidence ("I'm scared to push it")
- Limping or favouring the injury site
If any red flag appears, revert to the previous phase. No rushing.
Psychological readiness
Some players are physically ready but mentally scared to return. This is common and real. Help them by:
- Ensuring they understand the return plan (knowing what's coming reduces anxiety)
- Pairing them with a trusted teammate in small-sided games
- Celebrating small progress ("You completed Phase 1, great work")
- Not forcing them โ if they're not ready mentally, pushing makes it worse
Handling recurrence
If a player re-injures the same area, you've progressed too fast. Start over at Phase 1. This is not a failure โ it's information. You now know their timeline needs to be longer.
Communication with parents
"[Player] is progressing well through Phase [X]. They'll be ready for [matches/full training] in roughly [timeline]. I'll monitor closely and update you weekly."
This clarity prevents the "why isn't my child playing?" conversation.
